A Glimpse into History
Stoupa holds a rich cultural heritage that traces back to ancient times. The area was historically linked to the nearby village of Kardamyli, mentioned by Homer in the Iliad. Stoupa also played a key role in Greece’s fight for independence, with the Mani Peninsula being a hotbed of revolutionary activity in the 19th century.
One of the most famous chapters in its history involves Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis and his friendship with Giorgis Sorbas, the inspiration behind the novel Zorba the Greek. Kazantzakis stayed in Stoupa during the early 1900s, and it is said that the nearby mines in the region influenced his writing.
